FAQ's ... What Are My Grand Parent's Brothers & Sisters to Me?

...and what terms are used for ancestral relatives outside the immediate family circles?

The siblings of any parent, grandparent, great-grandparent would be aunt/uncle, great aunt/uncle, great-great aunt/uncle. The spouse of any of these aunts or uncles is also considered an aunt or uncle, but ONLY for as long as they are married to your blood aunt/uncle; and that person's extended family (parents, brothers, sisters, cousins, etc.,) are NOT considered related to you at all.

The children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc., of all those aunts and uncles are cousins.

In-law relationships are very few. You have brother/sister in-law, and mother/father in-law. That is about it. Your spouses grandparents, aunts/uncles, and cousins, etc., would not be related to you. However, if you have kids with this spouse, his family would be related to your kids in the same relationship as they are to your spouse, plus one generation (example: Your husband's grandparents would be great-grandparents to your kids you have with that husband; his aunt would be great-aunt to your kids; his first cousin would be first cousin once removed to your kids, etc.).
